Pet Insurance

Pet Insurance policy covers any animal kept not for economic gain but for the owner’s comfort e.g. Dogs, Cats and others. Pet Insurance can provide a basic cover for loss/death of insured animals due to; accident, disease, epidemics or euthanasia on advice of a qualified vet doctor.

Pet insurance pays, partly or in total, for veterinary treatment of the insured person’s ill or injured pet. Some policies will pay out when the pet dies, or if it is lost or stolen

Why Pet Insurance

Pet medical insurance is essentially a risk mitigation strategy for guarding against significant medical expenditure for treatment of sick or injured pets. Pet owners could be slapped with costs they are not prepared for and the right pet insurance can offer financial assurance and access to the best possible care for their pets. While many of the pet costs come down to food and basic care, an emergency vet visit can cost thousands of shillings.

Which Covers Are There For Pets

The cover spans over treatment expenses, public loss and can also be customized to include death due to accidental poisoning, accident in transit by air, rail or road, and risks associated with animal shows in Kenya, besides burglary and breeding risks. If the animal is incapacitated and unable to work, which is considered equivalent to death, this eventuality can also be insured.

Exclusions

  • Pre-existing medical condition which existed prior to you taking out your pet insurance policy. They fall into two categories.
  • Waiting period which is before the cover starts.
  • Treatments such as vaccinations, spaying, castration, flea, worm and tick treatments, grooming, claw clipping and teeth maintenance are often excluded from pet insurance cover.
  • Pet insurance policies exclude any expenses that arise due to pregnancy, giving birth and treatment of any offspring.
